Determining Needs vs. WantsIt's a good idea to make a list of all the things you've been dreaming about with your impending move. List everything you can think of that you both want and need including, pool, large closets, close to schools, nice neighborhood. Getting your wants and needs on paper will help you in the decision process later. While writing your home aspirations, be sure to determine which aspects of your home are things you want, and which are those that are absolute requirements. Rarely does one find a home that has everything they want and need, for a price they can afford. Realistically, buying a home, new or used involves give and take. For example, you may have wanted a nice backyard and a welcoming porch. The home you find may have no porch, but an amazing backyard. In this case, you may be willing to make the trade off. The things you need, on the other hand, are usually not as negotiable. If you have three kids, you certainly will need more bedrooms. You'll know to pass on every home that seems perfect in every way, but lacks adequate space. This is all common sense, here. The important thing to remember is to write everything down, because most of the time, home buying has it's moments of indecision. You'll be glad to have a list that you can refer back to again and again during the home buying process.
